Botanical Illustration for Wellness Brands
Every illustration begins with the plant, not the brief. Before a single mark is made, I research the botanical thoroughly: its structure, its properties, what makes it immediately identifiable. I work in pencil first, then build the final piece digitally using a Wacom pen, a process that keeps the observational accuracy of traditional botanical illustration and the flexibility a brand needs across packaging, educational content, and communications. For wellness brands, the result is illustration that your customers read as evidence of what the product actually contains.
If you have a brief, or the beginning of one, I'd like to hear it.
What working together looks like

The illustrator behind the studio
I am Emma L Kurran, I draw the plants in your wellness brand the way your customers hope they were drawn: researched thoroughly, made by a person.
Before I was an illustrator I was an animator for six years, finishing as a technical animator at MPC, one of the largest VFX studios in the world. That job was research-led from the ground up. So is this one.
Research
Research is a vital part of my illustration process. Understanding how a plant grows and is used informs how I draw it.
Of course this means I get to find out some incredible facts, I share these in The Herbarium.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
The licensing fee covers where, how long, and in what territories your brand can use the illustration. A product label used in the UK for two years costs differently to a global campaign. I calculate this individually for every brief, which is why I quote per project.

All you need is a rough brief.
A sense of where you want to use the work, and a general timeline is enough to start a conversation. You do not need a fully formed brief before you get in contact.
-
That depends on your needs and contract.
If you require exclusive rights, meaning I cannot reuse or sell the illustrations to anyone else, get in touch to discuss exclusive licensing options.
If you don't need exclusivity, it's worth knowing that I never create identical illustrations for competing brands. Every illustration is tailored to your brief, making it distinctly unique regardless of licensing terms.
-
Yes.
A clear licensing agreement is provided with every contract. This includes commercial usage rights for the illustrations you receive, documenting exactly what you can and cannot do with the artwork.
For example, usages can include:
Product packaging and labels
Social media posts and marketing
Website graphics and banners
Email marketing campaigns
Print materials (flyers, brochures, posters)
Brand identity and style guides
But will exclude:
Reselling or redistributing the illustrations as standalone products
Sub-licensing the illustrations to other companies
Claiming authorship of the illustrations
-
Yes, I work with brands internationally. All communication is handled remotely, and licensing is calculated appropriately for the territory of use.
-
We go through rounds of approval for several stages for each illustration to make sure we are both on the same page and the final artwork is something you love.
1st round of review is composition.
2nd/ 3rd rounds of review are levels of detail and colour.
If you're not satisfied:
Email me within 7 days of delivery with specific feedback. I'll make revisions based on your brief. If the illustration fundamentally doesn't match your original request due to miscommunication, I'll redraw it at no extra cost.
In the rare event that revisions haven't resolved the issue, we can discuss options together.
The goal is always to deliver botanical art you're genuinely happy to use. Clear communication and sketch approval process prevents most issues before final delivery.

No question is too small or too obvious — the first question I asked on my first day at MPC (as a technical animator at a global VFX company) was how to turn on the computer. Get in touch and we'll figure it out together.
