Botanical Illustration Pricing

Illustration prices can seem a little mysterious if you've never commissioned artwork before.

There are two things that influence the cost:

The illustration: The research, size, complexity, detail and use of colour.

The licence: What you'll use the artwork for, where you'll use it and how long you'll need it.

Both are included in your quote, so you'll know what you're paying and how you can use the finished artwork before deciding whether to go ahead.

The prices below give you an idea of what to expect. Once I know what you're looking for, I can give you a quote based on your particular project.

What Goes Into a Commission?

There's rather more to botanical illustration than sitting down and drawing a plant.

Research and planning

I'll look into the botanical subject, your brand and what you're trying to communicate. This helps establish which details matter and how best to present them.

Developing the illustration

We'll begin with sketches and composition, then work through the linework, details and colour. You'll have opportunities to review the artwork as it develops, with the agreed number of revisions included in your quote.

Preparing the finished artwork

Once approved, I'll prepare the files for their intended uses, whether that's packaging, websites, print or educational materials.

Commercial licensing

Your quote also includes a commercial licence covering the agreed uses, duration and territory. You'll know exactly what you're permitted to do with the artwork before the project begins.

Licensing & Exclusivity

Illustration licensing can sound rather complicated, but the basic idea is straightforward.

When you commission or purchase an illustration, you're buying permission to use the artwork. The copyright remains with the illustrator.

The licence sets out what you can use the artwork for, where you can use it and for how long. This might include packaging, websites, social media, educational materials or print.

Bespoke illustrations

Bespoke artwork is created specifically for your brand and is exclusive to you. We'll agree on how you need to use it, and the commercial licence will be included in your quote.

Botanical Illustration Library

Library illustrations are licensed on a non-exclusive basis, meaning other brands can purchase and use the same artwork.

Each pack includes a commercial licence covering permitted print and digital uses worldwide, with no expiry date.

If having artwork created entirely for your brand matters to you, bespoke illustration is the way to go.

For a more detailed explanation, the Association of Illustrators has a useful guide to licensing.

What if I'm Not Happy With the Illustration?

You'll have opportunities to review the artwork as it develops, beginning with the composition and moving through the details and colour. That way, we can discuss changes while they're still relatively straightforward to make.

If something isn't working, tell me. I'd much rather know while we're developing the illustration than discover it when everything is finished.

The number of revision rounds will be agreed before we begin, so you'll know what to expect. If something doesn't match the approved brief, we'll look at what needs correcting and work out how to put it right..

Have a Project in Mind?

Whether you have a detailed brief or just an idea you'd like to explore, I'd be interested to hear what you're working on.

We can talk about what you need, how illustration might fit into your project and what a suitable approach would cost.
